Box

Box

An item at Metropolitan Museum of Art

This box has an elaborate cast escutcheon of the type found on high-style case furniture, yet its painted ornament—consisting of various spray and vine designs—appears to have been the work of an amateur. Inscriptions on the interior suggest that the original owner was Rebecca Lynde (d. 1716) of Saybrook. She may also have been responsible for the decorative painting.
