Coffeepot
Robert Peaston
An item at Metropolitan Museum of Art
The New York silversmith Myer Myers made the sugar bowl, creampot, and tongs (2012.244.2–.4) to accompany this English coffeepot, echoing its repoussé Rococo ornament of sinuous C-scrolls and floral motifs. All four objects bear the initials of Dorothy Remsen, who married Abraham Brinckerhoff of New York in 1772. Such commissions were an important way for domestic silversmiths to familiarize themselves with the prevailing European styles.
