Fireback
Colebrookdale Furnace
An item at Metropolitan Museum of Art
Iron firebacks protected the chimney’s masonry and reflected heat back into the room. This example features a central design of an arcade supported on twisted columns, interspersed with hearts and tulips. It was cast at Colebrookdale Furnace, the first iron foundry in the colony of Pennsylvania.
